Rails-To-Trails Conservancy is a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. whose mission is to create a nationwide network of trails from unused rail lines. The goal of this organization is to connect the country in a unique way that promotes alternative methods of transportation and also that promotes healthy living among Americans. The organization currently has more than 150,000 members and supporters and 20,000 miles of trails built throughout the U.S. with an additional 9,000 miles of potential trails.
The Central Georgia Rail-to-Trail Association is a non-profit organization established to promote the implementation of a trail system in Jones, Bibb and Baldwin County. There is currently 33 miles of former railways in this area. Developing this area into a trail network would benefit these three counties in numerous ways; by promoting healthy activity, economically, environmentally, historically and socially.
